FREEDOM FIGHTERS

As it is 15th. Aug. today it is our moral duty to remember our national heros who at the cost of their lives and after facing innumerable atrocities made it possible for us to breathe in this open air of Bharat Mata. My father met Subhash Chander Bose while he was at Dalhousie and all his life he narrated many a times the moments spent with Bose. I am tempted to narrate a family incident to show the stuff of which freedom fighters were made.
My taya ji sh. Baldev Mitter Bijli ji was a freedom fighter. He spent 20 years of his prime youth in British jails. He was tied to a slab of ice for many hours. His body developed sore and was devoid of any sense and full with excruciating pain but he never uttered the word hai or words of regret from his tongue. Vande matram were the words to get relief from pain. When my father went to meet him at Lahore jail, he was unable to sit eyes blood red and skin desquamated body blue full of contusions even in this condition he came smiled and said Narender Vande Matram. Tears rolled from papa’s eyes but not from eyes of my Taya ji. .....
